Getting closer to the Spring Festival, on Jan 31st, 2008 Guangdong Museum of Art will show you a specific exhibition "The Scenic Eye" Visual Arts and The Theater. This is a cooperated program held by Guangdong Museum of Art and Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Guangzhou. We also have to express our appreciations to IFA (Institute for Foreign Culture Relations) for providing such a wonderful exhibition! As a gift for the New Year from Guangdong Museum of Art, "The Scenic Eye" would last for nearly four weeks beyond the New Year's holiday. until to Feb 24th.If you go there at that time, "The Scenic Eye" will welcome you at No.3 and 4 exhibition halls on the first floor. Hope you could be blessed by the best wishes from Germany! Since the idea for the exhibition was proposed, it's been almost 10 years for it to prosper when traveling around the world. The original idea was from Rene Block, the influential German gallerist and Museum director of Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel. According to the attitude for theater from Rene Block, theater cannot be made hypothetically. It needs a concrete cause: the place, the city, the director. Therefore, it was not the intention of the curator to invite artists to make works for the theater, but rather to create works reflecting the theater through the visual arts. Wolfgang Storch, as the curator, is the key person to transform this idea into this experimental exhibition about visual arts and theater. He invited 19 artists, including one from China, and the others mostly come from Germany or Czech. Even though the invited artists are professionals in different artistic fields, and moreover, have been focusing on their own interests, they are absolutely enthusiastic at the proposed subject. To some of them, it is a challenge as well, for they did not have any experience working for theater. However, we can still "read" 19 different ideas about theater from these genius artists. They found their way ,and chose the relative symbols they know to formulate what theater is made of in their own opinions. The results or works we will see in the exhibition may not be concerned about theater directly, but artists could even help us to transcend theater, stage, or art itself through their works. Then as a result, we can think about the relationship between human beings and physical spaces, culture, or the society. Perhaps, we audience could jump out of where we are and what we are used to at least for a moment to look back into ourselves and our life!
