Get the World to Draw Exhibition Shows The Art of Imagination

The Norwegian cartoonist who teaches kids creative drawing on Haha TV's "Happy Art" is putting on a solo exhibit called "Get the World to Draw." It features a giant walk-in dragon, writes Fei Lai.Albert Einstein said, "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." Spreading imagination everywhere is what Norwegian cartoonist Oistein Kristiansen has been doing for years. His entertainment and other programs worldwide teach creative drawing to kids and expand their imagination.Kristiansen, who now teaches drawing on Shanghai's Haha TV, will hold a solo exhibition, "Get the World to Draw," from today through Tuesday at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art.It showcases his work as a cartoonist, caricaturist, painter, designer and TV personality and includes humorous paintings, colorful furniture and a multimedia center featuring TV shows.A highlight is an enormous dragon sculpture that kids can enter. They can have their photos taken at the dragon's mouth."My ambition is to develop imagination and creativity among kids and to get the world to draw," Kristiansen says. "It is my hope that every child will be able to draw so that they can communicate their ideas better."Having toured more than 40 countries and regions, Kristiansen has been delivering his unique blend of art and imagination to kids all over the world.These days Kristiansen appears on Haha TV's "Happy Art" show, teaching Chinese kids through animation, doodling and drawing.More fun and educational activities can be found on the program's Website (www.tutule.com). An art competition offers the chance to win a family holiday in Kristiansen's native Norway.After graduating from Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in New York, Kristiansen moved to Asia and became a successful commercial artist and cartoonist.A turning point came in 1999: He decided to teach kids how to draw and express their imagination, and become more creative. He set up the School of Constructive Imagination to teach drawing, design, animation and imagination to kids.An educational DVD game, "Little Oistein," will be released in Europe in March.
