Rijksmuseum, the famous Dutch national museum in Amsterdam which is undergoing renovation, will not reopen until 2013, three years later than planned, Dutch paperDe Volkskrant reported Wednesday. Dutch Culture Minister Ronald Plasterk told the parliament Tuesday that the renovation project has to go through a new European tender process because of disagreements on price for renovating the main building between the government and the construction company BAM. That means the work will not start again until next year at the earliest, the minister said. The renovation of the Dutch capital's most prestigious museum has been beset by problems -- there have been disputes over the overall control of the project, over whether or not to keep the cycleway under the building and where to place the new entrances, etc. BAM, the only company to tender for the project, put in a tender of 222 million euros (333 million U.S. dollars) to complete the main work. The Culture Ministry wants to cap the cost at 134 million euros (201 million U.S. dollars), an amount calculated by an independent advisory body. Work on the project has been halted since last summer, the report said. BAM has already completed the new studios and cellar. The Rijksmuseum is known for its large collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. It houses some masterpieces of great Dutch painters, including The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn, and The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer.
