March 1st marked the beginning of an initiative to open Chinese art to a broader audience. All national and provincial comprehensive museums in China have ceased to charge admission. In Shenyang, the capital city of Northeast China's Liaoning Province, the first day of the no charge policy attracted more than 5000 local residents. That's ten times the usual turnout in the past.Early in the morning, the Liaoning Provincial Museum was thronged by local residents. Seven remarkable exhibitions featuring ancient Chinese civilization, calligraphy, painting, handicrafts, coins and inscriptions encouraged the high turnout.Zhong Wen, Shenyang resident, said, "It's my first visit to the museum and exhibits. It left my eyes dazzled. The exhibits are exquisite - beautiful. I learned something from it."Zhou Quanyue, Shenyang resident, said, "My boy is in the first year of primary school. I would like him to learn more about history. And the visit has been instructive for me too."The free entry program invites more people to the museums. It also calls on museums to enhance services to meet local demands.
