The Japanese artist often called a modern day Warhol, has opened a retrospective exhibition in New York. Takashi Murakami is being honoured by New York's Brooklyn Museum with the largest retrospective look at his work ever assembled. There's also plenty of Murakami's art for sale, right next to the exhibition, where the Louis Vuiton shop is stocked up with his designs. The exhibit, entitled simply "Murakami," features more than ninety works spanning the artist's entire career.Murakami is among the most influential artists to emerge from Asia in the late twentieth century. His body of work embraces elements of fashion, advertising and the world of entertainment, creating sometimes massive and thought-provoking works of pop art. His recurrent reference to pop culture has led many to compare Murakami to Andy Warhol. But, Murakami says even though he feels honoured by the comparison to Warhol -- what matters to him is that people appreciate the effort behind his pieces.Takashi Murakami said, "I am thankful if people enjoy it --if possible, I hope viewers understand that my team and I try to bring in high level technique for the work we do."One of Murakami's pieces is recognizable around the world --worn by the fashion elite. It's the Louis Vuitton Multicolor Monogram. In 2002, the artist collaborated with the fashion house to create a new range of leather products printed with his own version of the famous "LV" logo. Today that logo can be seen among many of Murakami's large-scale pieces.
