Turning the subject to more contemporary arts. Russian art is enjoying increasing popularity. Sotheby's says Russian Art is fetching higher prices at every auction. Even though 19th century paintings are still the most valuable at sales, contemporary Russian art is also gaining ground. The Head of Russian Paintings at Sotheby's, Sonya Bekkerman, says the Sotheby's 2007 Russian art sale achieved record results. She adds that the 2008, 19th century collection has some exciting paintings on offer.Sonya Bekkerman, Head of Russian Paintings, Sotheby's, said, "The difference between this auction and last season's and this season's Russian Art auction is that it's really unique to have so many examples from the 19th century and such good examples from the 19th century."19th century Russian paintings still out-price their contemporary siblings. But the more modern art is starting to achieve record results at auction as well.Sonya Bekkerman, said, "Really this is the area to look at simply because it will be I think, where we're going to see more records. And I think with each sale, if you look at our results, we are selling pretty remarkable records for Russian contemporary artists, including, you know, million dollar prices already. So, it's really beginning to catch up with the 19th and early 20th century."Besides 19th century and contemporary works, the sale will also include a selection of applied arts. The top lot of this collection is a porcelain centrepiece with gilt-bronze mounts. It's expected to sell between 2 million and 3 million U.S. dollars.
