Chinese artworks - and a 101-carat diamond - are highlights of Christie's 2008 Hong Kong Spring Sales at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center from May 22 to 29.The objects going under hammer include Chinese contemporary art, traditional ink-wash painting, calligraphy, jewels and watches.Given the enthusiasm for Chinese contemporary art, Christie's will hold a special auction of works by heavyweight painters on the night of May 24. They include Cai Guoqiang, Zhang Xiaogang and Zeng Fanzhi. The "Mask Series 1996 No. 6" by Zeng is estimated to be worth around HK$25 million (US$3.2 million). Zeng rose his fame through his "Mask" series, usually featuring two or three characters in a canvas. However, in the work to be auctioned, there are eight figures wearing white masks, standing side by side. Because of its large size and number of figures, the work has generated great interest from many collectors domestically and overseas. In the jewel auction, the highlight is a 101.27-carat colorless diamond- the biggest colorless diamond at auction during the last 18 years. The estimated price is around HK$60 million. There were only three 100-carat colorless diamonds at Christie's in previous years, all of them sold in Geneva. However, due to the rapid development in the Asian market, Christie's is promoting this diamond for the new rising collectors in Asia. Likewise, its promotion of watches from Cartier and Patek Phillipe.
