Botanist Brandishes Paint Brush at Shanghai

Years ago Singaporean botanist Ng Yak Whee switched to art, drawing inspiration from both Mother Nature and human nature. His emotional landscapes depict psychic and poetic abstract scenes.Ng is hunting for a Shanghai studio where he can conjure more cityscapes. A solo exhibition of 30 canvases is underway at Original Song Gallery."Discarding everything else, I want to let colors speak for themselves," Ng says.He draws inspiration from nature, blades of grass, trees, mountains, clouds and water. As a national park botanist, he was perpetually looking at trees, until he sometimes related to them as humans."Deep in every landscape exists a familiar face," he says. Faces and landscapes often merge in mixed media using multiple techniques to achieve physical and emotional shades.Born in 1954 in Singapore, Ng graduated from Nanyang University in Henan Province in 1979. He first worked as a park botanist for several years, but quit to pursue his art dream. His latest works are abstract landscapes of colors and lines, devoid of figurative elements. Intersecting lines and diverse colors fuse into spontaneous and charming scenery.Casual and cheerful, the work may say something about the artist himself who gave up a regular nine-to-five lifestyle to be a vagabond artist. His abstract landscapes, though they have won wide acclaim, don't add up to a rich material life. "I never regret my choice, because I love art," he says. "Of course, there are certain moments when I doubt my future."Parallel to his landscape series, there's a series of faces, explicit or implied, that emerge from landscapes. Shock, confusion, bitterness, conflict and anticipation are part of his human landscape."Deep in every person's eye is a familiar landscape," he says. Ng is passionate about Shanghai, or perhaps "every familiar tree or face" in the city."Shanghai is amazing," says the painter who plans to record the city's "real" and psychic landscapes.
