Collector Shelby White to Return Two Antiquities to Greece

New York philanthropist and art collector Shelby White agreed to return two antiquities from her private collection to Greece.

The section of a tomb stele, dating to the early 4th century B.C., and the bronze calyx wine bowl from 340 B.C. will be returned this month, after agreement was reached yesterday, the Greek Culture Ministry said today in an e-mailed statement. The items were illegally excavated and removed from Greece and acquired by White in good faith, the ministry said.

The stele section will be reunited with the lower section of the item that was discovered during excavations in the 1960s.

Greece, following Italy's lead, has been negotiating with museums and collectors to retrieve artifacts it says were illegally excavated and smuggled abroad. Over the past two years, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the world's richest art institution, has agreed to return to Greece the four items claimed by the country, settling a decade-long dispute.

Earlier this year, White agreed to return 10 antiquities from her private collection to the Italian government, becoming the first private individual to return artifacts to Italy.
