Some of the leading lights of the Taos Society of Artists and the Santa Fe Art Colony will be featured this November 8, 2008 at the 15th annual Santa Fe Art Auction.
The auction -- the largest of its kind in the Southwest -- will feature work from the likes of Joseph Henry Sharp and Eanger Irving Couse, founders of the Taos Society of Artists, and Birger Sandzen, the master Swedish-born landscape painter.
At last year's Santa Fe Art Auction, many pieces sold over their estimated prices, including Dorothy Brett's "Shrouded Figures under a Full Moon," which, estimated between $8,000 - $10,000, sold at $18,000. Leon Gaspard's "Indians at the Kiva" sold for well over its estimate of $30,000 - 40,000 for $69,000, and Bob Kuhn's "Bear and Gull" estimated at $3,000 - $4,000, sold for $7,800.
2007 auction highlights included Charlie Russell's "Bighorn Sheep Winner Take All," which sold for $134,400; J.H. Sharp's "Bottom of the Hill, Studio Yard" which sold for $103,500; E.I. Couse's "Pawhyumma, Umitilla Indian," selling for $134,400, and J.H. Sharp's "Indian Encampment (In Winter's Embrace)" sold at $201,600. This year's auction is set for November 8th, 2008, at Santa Fe Convention Center and Visitor's Bureau, 201 West Marcy, Santa Fe, NM.
