The world of communication has enabled Contemporary Art today to explore new grounds and to be more versatile. The contemporary world has become a global village with the help of the expansion of worldwide communication network, urbanization and the mass consumptive culture. The diffusion of information has become an important quality of the contemporary world. These changes of conditions contribute to the re-sculpting of the artist’s creativity; it has now become harder for artists to express themselves on a personal level or from a microscopic perspective. Thus, the relationship between artistic creativity and social phenomenon has become a constant topic of discussion in a lot of artworks. Under such circumstances and artistic atmosphere, what is the way and the attitude the artist should have to proceed to his creative journey? Wang Du provided us with an answer.
Wang Du’s acuminous aesthetic sense had grasped the sapiential essence from everyday mundane images/information to raise the attention of the environment of the society that we are living in. Wang Du is creating his work from a news anchor’s point of view. His work overloads with information tools such as images, videos as well as television sets and computers as a symbol to convey his idea. Wang Du is not trying to explain or criticize anything; it is hard to describe his work precisely in words, the existence of information itself already indicates a serious link with the society. This kind of information is acquired from the reality of our society, while it also creates a certain kind relationship with its surroundings continuously. Wang Du is using “collective consciousness” to operate as a unified force in the society to express his idea and give it a deeper sense of liberation.
Wang Du, an internationally renowned contemporary artist, skilfully transforms the meaning of information into the form of sculptures. Most of his works are enormous and he usually uses a lot of images. The impact of the mass of sculptures and the overloaded images give the audience an intense but strange feeling both visually and mentally. Through his direct, humorous, sarcastic way of expression and the extraordinary visuals, his works intrude the reality of our society. In 2004, his work ” The Parade Ceremony” demonstrates Wang Du’s “ruthless” humour, he put tanks in the army along with the kids’ slingshots to create an obvious contrast. In 2005, “Missle”, he made a huge fly bomb which later carried by the French Army vehicle cruise through the city centre of Lyon. Wang Du discuss serious subjects in his work with a light- hearted way, it shows us why humour is so important in such a secretless yet isolated society.
Rodin once said that the origin of creativity is not from inspiration, in fact, inspiration does not exist. Wang Du shares the same vision on that. In “International Kebab”, he loaded pictures that weight 7 tons in total on a 9 meters tall turn plate, the installation looks like a Turkish Kebab which let the audience carve out pictures from it freely, the remaining pictures will be grouped together to reform into part of the piece again, creates different dimensions for the work. More often, Wang Du doesn’t think that he is creating something new, but just redefining meaning of certain things and a certain way of thinking. Due to globalization and commercialization, the state of China now is quickly turning into an “international kebab”, everyone wants to have a piece of it, this situation has very similar qualities with the distribution process of the Turkish Kebab. Wang Du used more than 10,000 pictures of random images taken all over China to accuse the cheapness of fast food and the overloading images, trying to give it a possible new meaning and to express his stand at the same time.
Wang Du treasures the language of using images, but at the same time he thinks that they are cheap and meaningless. He has his own way of looking at images and the society, just as every audience will have their own unique way of looking at them too.
