Qiu Zhijie: Ataraxic of Zhuang Zi – A Suicidology of The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, solo exhibition of recent works of renowned contemporary artist Qiu Zhijie, is representing at Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art.
As soon as you step into Zendai MoMA, a huge certificate of merit will first catch your attention. Different from a regular certificate, this one has sharp knives pointing at the viewers. Entering the exhibition hall, you will find an infusion set hung from the ceiling and black ink slowly injected into a transparent gourd on the floor. When one gourd is full of ink, staff of the museum will replace it with an empty one. At the same position upstairs, there is an automatic ink-rubbing machine, which will provide constant flow of ink for the gourd downstairs. Moreover, a huge transparent gourd lies on the floor, with several black butterflies resting inside. With the special effect created by the lighting, people will feel like being at the bottom of the sea. Such scene will easily remind people with the story of Zhuang Zi’s butterfly dream. For an instant, we will become bewildered: the transparent skin of the gourd separate the viewers and the butterflies in two spaces. We wonder if it is the butterflies being confined in the gourd or ourselves.
With the presentation of various historical documents and installation works, the exhibition will show the measures and psychological interventions Qiu Zhijie and other suicide-prevention volunteers have taken to help those who want to commit suicide on Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. Meanwhile, Qiu will also introduce elements mentioned in Taoist classics such as butterflies and gourds into his installations, aiming to inject a Taoist tranquilizer to the fast-paced life through an artisticway.
