Beijing's Olympic village was built on a former farming village. The people that lived there bid farewell to their rural courtyard, moving into modern apartments and adapting to a more urban lifestyle. But they have preserved the culture of their original village, in a newly built museum sponsored by a former resident.
Remnants of the village of Wa Li are kept in a museum built in Xiao Tang Shan, north of the Olympic village.
Yang Delu used to live in Wa Li before it became the Olympic village site. Under his initiative, the community provided information about the founding of the village, and donated farming tools, vintage photos, and other mementos.
The museum also includes a hall displaying the villagers' efforts to help build the Olympic Village. Yang says he got the idea to set up the museum from his mother, who was reluctant to give up her rural lifestyle. Yang also hopes the museum can serve as a testimony for the development of the area.
Yang has planted crops around the museum. He wants Beijing's rural culture to live on for generations to come.
