A stone carved painting depicting the ancient water system in Kerjian township of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has been discovered. Archeologists believe the stone carved painting is from the third century A.D.
The ancient painting was uncovered five kilometers southeast of the Kerjian township. It was inscribed on a giant stone that stands around ten meters above sea-level.
The painting details some 38 rivers, streams, spring heads, channels and their distributions. Experts say the painting shows the water system back then is similar to what it is today. The stone carved painting is thought to be of great historical significance for the research of groundwater resources in Xinjiang.
