An open exhibition featuring a cluster of sculptures created by Yu Jiyong and Wu Jingru is currently running on Nanjing Road W.
Organized by the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Committee, the exhibition of about 40 pieces in the square opposite the Park Hotel, offers a bright change from the hustle and bustle of the urban life.
"It is not so easy for a sculptor to have an outdoor exhibition in the city, either due to a limited budget or limited space," says Yu, an associate professor at the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute. "But thanks to the organizer of this exhibition, my sculptures are finally able to be shown to the public."
The exhibition is a mixture of masculine power and feminine romance as the sculptures were created by a male and a female.
Noted for his "Rope Knots" series, Yu tries to convey an Oriental message of union or connection through the twisting intensity and strength expressed in his bronze works.
"No matter how tight and complicated the knots are, they simply become two flat lines when they are unwound. That's the depth in my pieces," Yu says.
Unlike Yu, Taiwanese artist Wu focuses on the beauty of female lines. Under her hands, women from both the present and ancient times pose leisurely, as if they are living in world of their own, undisturbed by the hectic outside world.
