Goya's engraving "Tristes presentimientos de lo que ha de acontecer (Sad feelings of things to come)"
A small engraving of "incalculable value" by Spanish master Francisco de Goya has been discovered in a Bogota hotel room, a month after it was stolen from a traveling exhibit in the city, Colombian police said Monday.
The work, entitled "Tristes Presentimientos" (Sad Premonitions), which was part of Goya's "Disasters of War" series, made between 1810 and 1815, was discovered after investigators followed an informant's lead to the hotel room, said Bogota police chief Rodolfo Palomino.
The engraving was stolen on September 11 from an exhibition put on by the Gilberto Alzate Avendano Foundation.
Palomino said the work was found wrapped in a sheet, in its original frame, which helped police authenticate the discovery.
No suspects have been arrested.
Upon its theft exhibition manager Luis Ortiz said the work was "part of Spain's cultural heritage with an incalculable value."
Sad Premonitions, which was insured for 80,000 euros (108,000 dollars), depicts a man kneeling, looking up to the sky with an anxious expression.
After its return to the exhibition the artwork will remain on display in Bogota until October 30, traveling next to Medellin, 400 km (250 miles) northwest of Bogota, before returning to its home at the Goya foundation in Zaragoza, Spain.
Goya (1746-1828) is regarded as the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Over the course of his long career, Goya moved from lightheartedness to deep pessimism and searching in his paintings, drawings, etchings, and frescoes.
