Anyone passing along Beijing's main thoroughfare, on the west end of Chang'an Avenue, cannot fail to see the large sculptures on the square of the China Millennium Monument. Here is a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Liu Yonggang. It's a tribute to his career over two decades.
The 78 large-scale works are of stone and bronze with a lacquer coating. The works are twisted and anthropomorphic Chinese characters, some as tall as seven meters. As the name of the exhibition "Stand Up", suggests, the artist was inspired by his sense of national pride. Two recent events stand in highlight - the successful mission of China's manned spacecraft Shenzhou 7 and the united relief effort following the Sichuan earthquake in May.
The exhibition is claimed the largest and longest-running open-air exhibition of a solo artist in China. The sculptures will stand at the China Millennium Monument until mid November.
