Songzhuang Village in the Tongzhou District of eastern Beijing became famous back in 2003 when the Songzhuang Art Community was established. It's now home to over three thousand artists, and art galleries of all size can be found throughout its streets. It's truly a destination for contemporary art lovers and collectors. And this past weekend the fourth Songzhuang Culture and Art Festival kicked off.
On art avenue in Songzhuang, you will see the dozens of sculptures. They are the creation of 30 of contemporary Chinese sculptors, with the common name "Blatancy".
With its theme, "Progress of Songzhuang", this year's festival features tri-dimensional art. Painting was the themes of the past three years.
More than 100 artists are showcasing their work in the festival and their art is created in close relationship with the culture and development of the town. Exhibits cover paintings, installations, video works, new media products and behavior art.
Exhibitions with various themes are gathered in the central region of Songzhuang. While the visitors may miss the meaning of most of the displays, and it is all typical of Songzhuang's avant-garde style.
The exhibit in the Original Art Gallery called "Pass Through the Field" is a assembly of 17 artists' ideas. And this row of flattened bicycles also confuse the visitors by its meaning.
No matter how outsiders might see, to artists who settled down, Songzhuang is more than an art community.
In the coming month, the village galleries, museums and workshops will provide a panorama of today's contemporary Chinese art scene. But remember that the exhibits are just part of the show - Songzhuang is the complete work of art, an expression of the avant-garde.
