Formerly a fine arts teacher at the Guangzhou No. 98 Middle School, Li Ruiran(李瑞然) has left his footprints on many sidewalks in the city and its suburbs over the years, hurried along by the hectic speed of urban development. You can now appreciate his photographs of old Canton at the Fei Gallery until November 8.
In 15 years he has used his camera to record disappearing landmarks and scenes from the old city, including downtown Zhongshan Si Lu (中三四路) and Zhongshan Wu Lu (中山五路), where various traditional brand shops are concentrated; Xiaoguwei (小谷围), now the location of university town; Liede village (猎德村), where the dragon boat contests are held; and Guanzhou island (官洲岛), officially closed and slated to become a bio-industrial base.
