Bernhard Maria Fuchs was born in Germany in 1959. He began his adventure with art at the age of 14 by painting in oils directly from nature, in the open air.
The artist now lives in the South of Germany. His home is located in a secluded place, on top of a hill in the middle of a jungle-like forest.
Fuchs regularly travels to different destinations, seeking inspiration in foreign landscapes. He made two trips to China, each of whom lasted for over a month. In 1997, he visited Kunming and the Yunnan province. During his second stay in 2007, he went to Beijing and Jundu-Shan-mountains.
Fuchs’s works do not focus on topographic details or the representation of particular places. Instead, the artist wants to show the dynamism in nature. He attempts to resist the power of the elements by fixing the changes brought to the landscape by wind, rain and light.
The artist’s aim is to capture a momentary impression of the world around him. That is why his works are always created on location, in one day, and never changed afterwards. Fuchs is not an impressionist, though. He interprets his works as documentaries. The term “impression” applies to the way he organizes the space of the painting and renders the olfactory and acoustic experiences as the visual imagery on the canvas.
The paintings by B.M. Fuchs work in four dimensions. Apart from the height and width of the canvas, there is the convex surface which resembles a relief. In this way, the paintings can be compared to iron casts. Last but not least, every painting has its own time frame, defined by the starting point of the process of creation and its definitive ending, the last brush stroke.
The works of Bernhard Maria Fuchs form part of many private and museum art collections. They have been exhibited side by side with the works of Elvira Bach, Bernd Zimmer, Otto Dix, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Pablo Picasso etc.
