The name KARAKUL refers to an ancient ram native to China, specifically dark in color, the "black sheep." KARAKUL has taken place in Guangzhou since 2001, and this is our 5th exhibition. We are a unique art festival because we specifically exhibit young and unrepresented artists who are currently living and working in Guangzhou, our very own locally-bred black sheep. Therefore, all the art seen at KARAKUL has been produced in Guangzhou, and is thus inextricably linked to and influenced by the concrete jungle that is our city.

Arts included sculpture, mixed media, oil/acrylic painting, Chinese traditional painting, print making and photography, as well as live performances and music.

~Opening Night~

We will hold a VIP opening event for art buyers & collectors, gallery & museum curators, and media on Friday December 12th, 7pm. This is the chance for interested persons to talk and interact directly with all exhibiting artists, and drink some wine in the process. Artists will give brief talks in English or Chinese on their experience of creating art in Guangzhou and read their artist statements. This event is by INVITE ONLY.

Exhibition is open to the public, with scheduled events including:

live music, poetry/literary readings, art video installations and documentary viewings, food and drink booths.

The exhibition will remain open to the public.

KARAKUL will be held at PingPong Space, a creative space which aims at promoting contemporary art and east-west culture communication.
