Writing brushes, ink sticks, paper and ink stones are regarded as the four treasures of traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy. They have played a pivotal part in the development of Chinese civilization over the past thousands of years. Today, let's take a look at how some of these are made.
A writing brush is a must in traditional Chinese calligraphy. The best-known brush is made in Huzhou, in east China's Zhejiang Province.
A professional brush maker says it takes 120 steps to make a Huzhou brush, which is far more sophisticated than the regular brushes, which take around 10 stages until they're finished.
He also said that sub-standard brushes are eliminated during the process, keeping only those with sharp tips.
The ink stick is also an important part of traditional Chinese painting. An ancient saying goes that an excellent ink stick for a person is just like a fine horse for a valiant general.
"Fen La Jian", a writing paper incorporating wax and powder is originated from the Tang Dynasty. It's said that some of the imperial decrees were written on such paper.
Liu Jin of East China's Anhui Province, aims to revitalize this ancient craftsmanship. With the help of his father, Liu has produced a series of "Fen La Jian", of various patterns and colors.
