Susan K. Freedman, president of the Public Art Fund, announced today the resignation of its director, Rochelle Steiner. Steiner joined the Public Art Fund in February 2006 and will leave her position on April 15 to pursue other projects. Steiner recently led the nonprofit organization through its project by Olafur Eliasson, The New York City Waterfalls, which was on view from June 26 through October 13.
Public Art Fund projects organized by Steiner and currently on view include Christian Jankowski’s Living Sculptures at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, four large-scale figurative sculptures by Robert Melee in City Hall Park, and Trapdoor, a group exhibition at Metro Tech Center in Brooklyn featuring new commissions by Ethan Breckenridge, Martha Friedman, and Sara Greenberger Rafferty and recent works by Francis Cape.
In a press release, Freedman noted, “Rochelle has been a remarkable director, only the fifth in our organization’s more than thirty-year history.” A search committee is being formed, under the leadership of Freedman, to begin immediately seeking qualified candidates to serve as the organization’s next director. The search committee includes the following members of the board: Sara Fitzmaurice, Jill Kraus, Adam Lindemann, Holly Lipton, Ronay Menschel, and Charles Short.
