China's 2,300 museums received over 150 million visitors last year. These museums play an important role in protecting cultural heritages and educating people about Chinese history. However, many of the regional museums are plagued with financial and technological problems. Some CPPCC members are calling for more attention for these museums.
Wang Chuanping is one of them. He is the honorary director of the Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing Municipality and is a dedicated enthusiast to promote the development of regional museums in China.
During his stay in Beijing for the annual CPPCC session, he visited the Capital Museum which was among the first batch of museums to open for free since 2008.
While amazed at the state-of-the-art exhibition halls and the vast number of well-protected antiques, Wang is concerned about the ailing situation faced by smaller-scale museums in other cities and counties.
Wang said that more than one thousand museums in China are struggling to maintain business. Many antiques can't be exhibited due to the obsolete halls and substandard technology. The key problem has been a lack of financial support for upkeep and management.
While stressing that government investment is important, Wang also called for more private funding to be channeled into regional museums.
