CHINA´s ReVision – Fokus Beijing

2009-03-20 09:07:46 未知

In the last decade the art scene and the art market in China are booming. The international interest and awareness in the art scene in China is tremendous and major exhibitions abroad marked the high standard of Chinese arts today.

This ongoing internation interest in this still quiet joung developement within chinese contemporary art is based upon the strong reflections about the meanings, the expressions and the medias how artists consider the world of nowadays to be. This leads especially within the younger generation of chinese artists to new reflections and to critical statements.

The actual exhibition “China´s ReVision – Focus Beijing”concentrates on fifteen artistical statements which exposes works from some the most famous chinese artists, who have changed the international image of chinese contemporary art within the last fifteen years. Works from Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun, Liu Xiaodong, Xu Bing, Zhang Xiaogang and Yan Pei-Ming count nowdays to the masterpieces although the criticis about their own time and life is clearly expressed. All these artworks reached already a level of expression that is mainly objective although aspects of surrealism are as well fundamental.

The reflections about their chinese tradition as well as the awareness of new developements can be understood as a sort of struggle between different cultures which are amalgamated within some of these works. The chinese tradition is also reflected with the glass-works from Xia Xiaowan or in the ironical drawings and paintings from Ji Daichun.

The hugh abstract paintings from Jiang Dahai allows as well a comparison with european abstract paints and shows its influence in his works. In a totally diffenrent way, but not less influenced by european art, the paintings from Yang Qi express both abstraction and figuration. This might be seen as well as a countermovement against pure figuration as it it prefered nowadays.

The current exhibition combines also new positions, which f.e. also shows the abstract art within the works from Wang Guangle or Chen Wenji. The impact of figuaration and narrative contexts are vivid in the photo-realistic paintings from Shi Chong, in the almost surrealistic photos from Gao Lei and in the neo-baroque sculptures from Mu Boyan.

This exhibition was first shown at the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany, (November 2008 – Januanry 2009) and was one of the most impressive views on contemporary chinese art in Germany within the last year.Curator: Dr. Beate Reifenscheid, Director Ludwig Museum Koblenz, Germany
