"Apollo Saettante" (4th century B.C.)
As part of the accord over illegally trafficked antiquities that saw the J. Paul Getty Museum repatriate several works to Italy, the Getty Villa has received its first loans from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, the L.A. Times reports.
The museum will receive two bronze figures found in Pompeii for a loan of two years. The two works — Statue of an Efebe (Youth) as a Lampbearer and Statue of Apollo as an Archer — are nearly life-size and have been tracked to the 1st century B.C. in Rome and the 2nd century B.C. in ancient Greece, respectively. The former will go on display at the end of the month; the latter will undergo conservation and study before it is shown in approximately a year.
The arrival of the works is timed to coincide with the Getty’s new show “Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples,” which opens May 3.
