Thirteen watercolors by Adolf Hitler have sold for £95,589 ($126,791) at an auction house in Shropshire, England, the Times (London) reports.
The sale was conducted by Mullock’s auction house at Ludlow Racecourse.
The results pleased the house’s historical documents specialist, Richard Westwood-Brookes, who said, “I thought they would go for between £5,000 and £6,000 [each].”
The works, which included a signed self-portrait that went for £10,000 and several landscapes, were painted between 1908 and 1914, when Hitler was in his 20s and an aspiring artist. Hitler applied to the Vienna academy but was not accepted.
“Of course, if he had been accepted, then we would have known him today as an artist and not as an evil tyrant,” suggested Westwood-Brookes.
