A 60-bottle set of 1982 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild fetched HK$1.44 million ($185,754) at a wine auction in Hong Kong, the top lot at a sale where the 10 priciest items were bought by Asian collectors.
The winning lot was one of 209 lots of wine offered to a packed salesroom of about 400 bidders at Christie’s International’s auction today. The London-based company sold 203 lots, which tallied HK$28 million, according to its statement. Most of the lots sold for more than their top estimates.
“The estimates were low,” said Agnes Hon, one of the auction’s top buyers, who bid for nearly every Chateau Margaux lot. “The low estimates attracted a lot of competition, which drove the final prices up.”
Hon, a Hong Kong-based private-equity investor, said she won between six and seven lots today, or more than 100 bottles.
The second most-expensive lot was a 12 bottle set of 2002 Romanee-Conti Grand Cru, which fetched HK$504,000, against a presale top estimate of HK$550,000. The auction continues today with the sale of Asian contemporary artworks.
