The Evening Sale of Asian Contemporary and Chinese 20th Century Art totaled HK$181,657,500/US$23,379,320 and was 89% by lot, 98% by value. The top lot of the evening was Sanyu's Cats and Birds which sold for HK$ 42,100,000/US$5,418,270, setting a new world auction record for the artist.
Eric Chang, Christie’s International Director and Head of Chinese 20th Century Art & Asian Contemporary Art, said: "Tonight’s Evening Sale of Asian Contemporary and Chinese 20th Century Art presented collectors with a highly selective group of works, many boasting significant provenance and history. The results, which nearly doubled pre-sale expectations and saw over 90% of lots selling within or above their high estimate, prove that our specialists brought together the right mix of works and matched them with attractive estimates to best meet the current market. The excitement in the packed saleroom was palatable, often building to applause, and we saw great activity not only from clients in the room, but also on the telephones, resulting in a truly international set of buyers and underbidders. We are particularly pleased with the new world auction record for Sanyu with Cat and Birds which sold for HK$42.1 million, far exceeding the previous record for the artist that Christie’s Hong Kong set in 2006. The two spectacular works by Zao Wou-Ki sold for the benefit of the Harvard Art Museum Acquisition Fund, Nous Deux and Vent et Poussière, fetched a combined total of HK$45million, with Nous Deux becoming the 2nd most expensive work from the artist ever sold at auction."
