With numerous episodes of fraud having been unearthed in the finance industry over the past year, the discovery of illicit acts in the art world comes as little surprise. Most recently, 72-year-old Joanne Shea pleaded guilty on Tuesday to stealing approximately a quarter of a million dollars from Skinner Inc., a Boston-based auction house and appraiser, the Associated Press reports. Shea, who had been charged with larceny and making false entries in corporate books, was sentenced to two years in home confinement, ordered to pay restitution to the auction house, and received 10 years of probation.
Shea served as an accounts receivable clerk for Skinner from 1993–2006. Rather than depositing several payments from successful bidders, she kept the money for herself. She nearly got away with the theft by adding incoming check payments of equal amounts to the auction house’s books.
