A major exhibition in Beijing is taking a retrospective look at the development of sculpture in China. The exhibition is being held at Songzhuang - a contemporary art arena.
"Chinese Posture: the First China Sculpture Grand Exhibition" is the largest of its kind in 60 years. It presents a selection of 170 pieces of the best art from around China.
Zeng Chengang, director of China Sculpture Academy said, "This exhibition reflects the diversified scene we have in sculpture creation in China, either in subjects, style or materials used."
The exhibits cover a wide spectrum, ranging from realistic to contemporary. Some are explicit, while others are more obscure and invite the use of imagination.
The trend is for sculptors to apply their own way of expressing, liberating themselves from the restrictions of established schools or styles. There is also increasing experimentation with less traditional materials.
But the exhibition has received mixed reviews from visitors and artists.
A visitor said, "Many of the exhibits are beyond my comprehension. It is no surprise, because the works are more personal than before. Artist's lives and experiences are more complicated. They are encouraged to think and create independently."
Pan He, sculpture, said, "The standard used to be very simple. Works that portray beautiful and true-to-life objects are considered good sculptures. But today many modern works make me feel nothing but confused. "
Pan He is not alone in holding this opinion. Many more are attracted to sculptures that are based on reality.
A visitor said, "I like sculptures which let me know what it means the moment I see it. The sculptures with center messages are easier for us outsiders to understand. "
The exhibition provides a panoramic view of Chinese sculpture. And, it demonstrates the unique challenges of the art form in modern China.
