A rare oval white diamond valued at more than $3.3 million is among the flawless gems up for grabs Dec. 9 at Sotheby’s "Sale of Magnificent Jewels" in New York.
The sale, which features creations by master jewelers such as Cartier, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and JAR, along with an estate collection influenced by 20th-century fashion icons, is estimated to earn in excess of $20 million.
Jewels from the collection of former Brazilian model and philanthropist Lúcia Moreira Salles include three gemstone rings mounted by Paris designer JAR and a selection of natural and cultured pearls.
“From the perfection of flawless diamonds and the rarity of natural pearls to the originality of one-of-a-kind pieces, our sale this season presents a captivating array of jewels that can only be found at auction,” said Lisa Hubbard, chairman of North and South America for Sotheby’s International Jewelry Department.
The selection of white diamonds includes the oval gem, weighing in at 30.48 carats with type IIa “Golconda-like” classification, according to Sotheby’s.
Also available is a collection of colored precious stones and rare examples of miniature works of art by 20th-century master jewelers, including an "Egyptian-Style Jeweled Scarab Belt Buckle, Cartier," created in Paris in 1926 and valued at $250,000 to $350,000.
