Wang Jianwei, "Ceremony" (2003).
“The Himalaya Project: Wang Jianwei and Nalini Malani,” which opened on Nov. 21 at Arario Beijing, represents a fascinating cross-cultural dialogue between these two pioneers of new media art from China and India, respectively. An exceptional pairing, Wang and Malani are two of the most consistently experimental, internationally established artists working in Asia today, both unafraid to blur genres and defy expectations.
Curated by art theorist Huang Zhuan and historian of Indian art Johan Pijnappel, the exhibition brings together representative video works, installations, paintings and photographs by both celebrated artists and is open through Jan. 24. With China and India asserting themselves globally as economic powerhouses and as flourishing sites for contemporary art production, this exhibition couldn’t be timelier.
