After a museum worker strike shuttered some of France’s most prestigious museums last week, some, including the Musee d'Orsay, reopened to the public this weekend as museum employees decided to return to work, though union officials cautioned that labor disruptions are likely to continue this week.
Workers at the Centre Pompidou, who were among the first to vote to strike over government plans to replace only one of every two retiring workers in an effort to save money, continued their protest, which has now stretched to two weeks. Workers there say that the plan would seriously hinder the operation of the museum, where 44 percent of employees plan to retire in the next ten years.
On Saturday, workers at the Palace of Versailles, the Arc de Triomphe, and the towers of the Notre Dame cathedral agreed to end their protest. At the Louvre, two-thirds of the building re-opened, though some workers have vowed to continue their strike.
French culture minister Frederic Mitterrand has so far made no indication that he is open to negotiating the government’s hiring plans. “It’s just a pause in the conflict,” said Franck Guillaumet, the head of the Pompidou workers’ union, told reporters.
