In Northwest China's Shaanxi province, the ancient city of Xi'an is launching a campaign to build and open more museums. The city is striving to become a capital of museums.
Shaanxi's provincial cultural authorities have announced a second list of museums and monuments that are freely accessible to the general public. The list includes seven major museums in Xi'an, the provincial capital. Among the institutions are the Xi'an Municipal Museum. They bring to twelve the number of museums open to the public free of charge in the city.
Known as the Cradle of Chinese civilization, Xi'an is one of the oldest cities in the country. It has served as the national capital and political center for multiple dynasties. With a rich legacy of ancient buildings, monuments, and cultural relics, Xi'an is home to 47 museums and memorial sites.
It is now seeking to double the number of museums in three years, mainly by encouraging the establishment of privately-funded attractions.
