Gratirude, a Breath Of Artistic Mind
It has not been very long since I made the acquaintance of Brother Zhiyong, but we had a lot of pleasant chats together. He often said that he had to make use of holidays to take pictures outside and wherever he went, he would come across some touching scenes and have them shot as nice photos simply because of “the Grace from Heave”. At the bottom of his heart, he is extremely grateful to his family, his post and his friends around. He feels very happy living in this world. As all this was said by this refined and gentle man whose face was imbued with delight, I was deeply impressed and I could not help pondering over his saying about “the Grace from Heave”.
Gratefulness is a spiritual habit. Unless one’s selfishness and self-importance have been inflated to extremity, it is common to everyone to have the sense of gratitude aroused by such relationships as the parental care, spouse’s company, teachers’ instruction, offspring’s filial expression and friends’ help, etc. We also have another kind of gratitude for the resourceful and plentiful material world including the sunshine, the mild breeze, the vernal rain, the autumn harvest and so on as valuable as our subsistence unless we are extremely insensitive or psychologically abnormal.
To the contrary of those selfish guys who often put on a long face, a grateful person would often have a smiling face because of delight for every gain anywhere. That is why Zhiyong smiles whenever he begins to speak. His smile can be seen anywhere at anytime and they are all from his heart. I really admire him for this.
The sense of gratitude enables a person to have a fine mentality of course, but what is more important is that it makes him find something more beautiful in this world. Such a person must be an artist by nature. Because of gratefulness, they freed themselves from the barrier of physical desires; because of gratefulness, they merged themselves in the world better; because of gratefulness, they have become sensitive and have splendid taste for arts. Zhiyong’s photographic works can be a typical example in this regard. His works are full of happy feelings. It is the love of the earth by the sun in such a way that a ray of golden sunshine from a gap of thick clouds over the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is shedding across the mountain slope and the pagoda roof; it is the care of the earth for the creatures in such a way that the smoky steam from a river in Xinjiang where the mushroom-like land is covered with snow in winter; it is the affection of the blue sky and white clouds for the black soil on the plateau in such a way that canola flowers are in full bloom everywhere on the Bashang Plateau; it seems that the air and wind are thinking of the human beings in such a way that the pure blue hue with a harmonious whole of the river, the town, the clouds and the sky of morning in Nyingchi. The human images in his photos have no sign of fright or impetuosity except casualness as a result of his extraordinary observation and discovery before catching the instant facial expression and atmosphere in the mood of peace and tranquility.
By looking repeatedly at his photographic works here, I found many famous mountains and rivers have been frequented by so many people, but such pictures taken by him still seem new and strange to me. That is because he positioned his camera according to his mind and mood so it is in the new angle. There are some pictures taken on the way of his journey and no specific name has been given to any of the scenes therein, which do not hinder me from appreciating their divinity and beauty at all. Yes indeed, so long as we are grateful to Heaven and Nature, so long as we have peaceful and tranquil mentality, there is nothing to worry about finding worthy scenery for photographic creation such as the beautiful wheat seedlings in the fields, the beautiful hairstyle and human decorations, the beautiful cooking smoke atop houses, the beautiful mountain cliffs and river flows, etc. Otherwise, if we have a shallow or greedy or impetuous mind, how could we find any thing beautiful even if we are beside the paradisiacal pond?
It is my firm belief that with a grateful heart Brother Zhiyong is sure to advance far and wide along the road of photographic art.
