Beijing's Ullens Center for Contemporary Art is hosting Austrian artist Erwin Wurm's debut show in China, open July 17 through September 15. Titled “Narrow Mist,” the show will feature Wurm’s signature performance, “One Minute Sculptures.”
Born in Austria in 1954, the artist currently lives and works in Vienna and New York. In the 1980s, Wurm started his series of “One Minute Sculptures,” in which the artist or a performer randomly mimics the poses of his viewers, holding each position for one minute, incorporating everyday objects such as vegetables, fruits, chairs, and shampoo.
Meant to blur the boundary between sculpture and performance, moments from the series are photographed — an attempt to add yet another layer of mediation to the experience of mundane tasks of both the performer and the viewer. His "Fat Car" series, also on view, features puffy cars made of polyurethane foam covered with lacquer, poking fun at the complacent lifestyle of the middle class.
