Hundred-Year-Old Tree Blooms Again——The Record of Transporting the Tree
The first day, September 19, 2007
7:00 a.m.
Anding Village,outside Tianjin
The branches of the tree have already been cut, and a holewith a diameter of more than two meters has already beendug. Its small roots have also been cut, with only two bigroots left to support the tree.
Although it has been raining in Beijing for the past couple ofdays, the Anding Village outside Tianjin has been sunny. Itmakes it particularly difficult for workers to dig the hole.
They say that it is a mulberry tree more than a hundred yearsold. Each year, it produces a lot of mulberries. If the treeis moved, it will be several years before mulberries growagain.
A crane is coming soon. Residents of the alley climbed tothe roof and temporarily cut the telephone line that wouldotherwise block the road. Others cut down a small tree sothat the big crane can drive into the alley.
2:00 p.m.
Two big cranes and a truck for transporting the tree arrived. The truck driver took a good look at the place, and decidedthat the first crane should drive into the courtyard in order topull the tree out of the hole and lower it into the alley.
After the crane parked, a big hook was lowered. Workerswrapped the tree trunk with straw and cloth in order toprotect its bark. They then attached a hook to the tree trunkand connected it to the hook on the crane.
The crane pulled the tree gently so that it would not fall overwhen its roots were being cut. When the workers cut themain roots, the tree fell to the groundLuckily, the bottom of the tree has no main root. Workersjumped into the hole to remove some earth in order to reducethe weight of the tree. They once again connected the hook onthe tree to the hook on the crane. The crane tried to lift the tree. However, because the iron bands on the tree trunk were nottight enough, the first attempt failed.
Some workers jumped into the hole again to dig out moreearth. Others connected the two hooks again.
3:00 p.m.
The crane pulled the tree out of the hole and lowered it into thenarrow alley. The workers applied red paint to the surfaces ofthe cut branches in order to prevent them from being eaten byinsects.*4:00 p.m.
The second crane drove into the alley, ready to move the treeon to the truck. It stopped at another alley, which is parallel tothe one where the tree was. At the intersection of the two alleysare hundreds of electric power lines.
A village official came and asked why the owner had soldthe tree. He said that the village government would not allowselling trees without official permission. After arguing, he gaveup and just stood there and watched. The tree was once again pulled above the ground. Workers tiedsome thick ropes on the tree to help control its position.
The alley was very narrow, and during the process ofmoving, the tree touched the walls of the house next to thetree’s owner, and dislodged several bricks. The neighborsdid not want to miss the opportunity, and the owner had togive them two hundred Yuan for compensation.
Workers again used the ropes to control the position of thetree, and this time it passed the electric lines successfully.
The truck backed up to an appropriate position, and the treewas lowered onto it.
At the moment when the hook attached to the crane wasremoved from the tree, the iron frame that had been preparedfor supporting the top of the tree broke.
The crane had to lift the tree again, and some workers movedthe frame to fix it.
5:00 p.m.
After being repaired the iron frame was put back on thetruck. The crane lifted the tree again and lowered it on theframe. It broke again.
The manager of the project gave up the idea of using the ironframe. He asked the driver to lower the rear section of thetruck, and put some straw on its surface. The tree finally left Anding Village safely.(The truck with the tree arrived in Beijing at night.)
The second day, September 20, 2007
9:00 a.m.
Workers had already started to work, and had dug the holewhere the tree would be planted. However, the big crane had not yet arrived because of traffic.
2:00 p.m.
The crane arrived. A small car was parked on the road. Theworkers surrounded the car and tried to move it away in orderto make some room for the crane to park. The owner of thegallery went to look for the owner of the car but couldn’t findhim. The workers towed the car away and left enough roomfor the crane.
3:00 p.m.
The crane was fully extended, easily lifting a small treepurchased by the owner of the gallery, which cleared the roofof the gallery and was lowered into the courtyard.
4:00 p.m.
The crane tried to lift the big tree. The crane driver and theproject manager were discussing the fact that the crane wastoo long. According to the computer, the crane can only liftsomething as heavy as six tons, but the tree weighed eleventons.
The crane lifted the tree a little, and let it float in the air.Workers tried to remove some earth from the tree root inorder to reduce its weight.
The crane driver decided to use a safer way to move the treeinto the courtyard. Instead of having it go over the galleryroof, which ran the risk of damaging it, he decided to move thetree through the alley that leads to the courtyard, through thecourtyard gate, and then lower it into the hole.
The tree successfully entered the alley and workers hold on toits trunk. However, because the alley is very narrow, it scrapedagainst the walls.
The crane driver was still worried about the tree being overweight, and moved the tree out of the alley again. The workers removed some more earth from the tree root.
5:30 p.m.
The crane lifted the tree, entered the alley again, and wentthrough the gate.
The manager gave orders from the roof and workers held theropes that were tied to the tree. The crane slowly lowered thetree into the hole. The crane held the tree and the workers began filling the holewith earth. Iron beams were also used to support the tree.
6:30 p.m.
The exhibition opened and the guests were enjoyingthemselves. But the workers still continued working.
