A Dialogue between Jia Aili and Feng Boyi
Feng: What do you think is such consciousness?
Jia: As suggested by its name, mainstream consciousness is the popular attitudes towards and way of science, logical connection, and rational thinking, etc. In fact, in theology, this kind of scientific rationality is a very funny logical loop including contemporary social, humanistic, scientific and historic logical connections. All these are what I’m striving to stay away from.
Feng: So you describe yourself as critical?
Jia: No critiques. It’s just like the moment I passed my grandpa’s book shelf without reading any one of those.
Feng: Is it because of your intended avoidance away from the conflicts?
Jia: That’s why I don’t think it is included in the range of surrealism, because in front of me, there is no significant conflict. It is of no importance in my feelings nor would be like to get involved in it.
Feng: Yet you still have your conflicts.
Jia: The fact that I have conflicts has nothing to do with me.
Feng: Then who?
Jia: No idea (laugh)! We basically stand in different positions in this dialogue. You believe in a binary world. However, the world is unary in my mind’s eye.
Feng: So what is that single element?
Jia: In God’s creation, wrath and joy are in essence the same thing. What really matters to me is that it more or less affects my choice of materials and themes. In my concept of time, memory is never clearly defined, which might have influence in my creation.
Feng: So according to my understanding, it can be concluded as an exploration of positioning among all uncertainties.
