Following the great success of Sotheby’s September wine auctions in London and New York, the two-day wine sale held at Sotheby’s Hong Kong concluded today with triumphant results - a testament to forty years of dedicated expertise of Sotheby’s wine department - marking the start of the new season. The sale of two outstanding private cellars - The Magnificent Cellar of Marcus D. Hiles on 2 October and The Classic Cellar from A Great 2 American Collector Part VI on 3 October realised an exceptional combined total of HK$107 million / US$13.7 million, well in excess of the high estimate (HK$74 million / US$9.5 million*). The saleroom was filled to capacity in the two-day sale and Sotheby’s Hong Kong completed the ninth consecutive 100%-sold wine auction in Asia in the last 18 months.
Serena Sutcliffe, MW, Sotheby’s Worldwide Head of Wine, said: “Prices during the last two days of sales were exceptionally buoyant, linked to the stupendous quality and condition of these two great private collections. Pétrus today was on fire! – all the First Growths, in all vintages, fetched astonishing prices, with the saleroom and the telephones going into battle for the amazing large formats.”
Robert Sleigh, Sotheby’s Head of Wine, Asia, commented: “With the sale of The Classic Cellar from a Great American Collector Part VI, Sotheby’s has sold HK$266 million / US$34 million of this superb collection. Asian collectors showed their confidence in this collection by bidding over 90% of the lots over the high estimate.
“Sotheby’s Hong Kong will provide the next opportunity to acquire great Bordeaux at auction in Asia with an extraordinary offering of Lafite direct from the Château on 29 October at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, with vintages from 1869-2009, followed by a fabulous collection of investment-grade top Bordeaux from SK Networks on
30 October.”
