When the leaves turn red and the cicadas end their summer concert, the season of autumn arrives; the overture of November starts. “霜月じゅういちがつ”, “Frost Month” is the Japanese meaning of November, referring to the frost that starts in the month of November. In the beginning of November 2010, IIDA Kiriko’s first Taiwan solo exhibition in Soka Art Center – Taipei takes the audience on a journey to the beginning of winter.
The blank spaces of IIDA Kiriko’s paintings are the same as the spotless white frost covering on the earth in early winter. The color “white” is not colorless to IIDA; instead, white is the most tolerant color, enfolding deepness of color or its temperature with which it embraces every color, just as November relatively contrasts the gradation of other months in the year. IIDA tries to describe the conflict between immortality and the transience of a living thing since she feels the beauty of the conflict. The mother earth is different than what people see when it is buried beneath the covering of white snow; without the mother earth, there can be no beautiful snow scenery, and people cannot move onto the next stage of their lives without going through the month of November. Even though it may not be the leading star of the scene, but its existence is essential. The expressions in the eyes of the characters from IIDA’s work reveal anticipations to the next stage. Although November is the end of the year, yet it foretells the coming of next year and the new hopes it brings along.
