When I was just a Child, whenever during holidays, my father would always prepare for me and my siblings some traditional Japanese foods such as tempura, mochi rice cakes, and miso soup. While he drank in cheerful spirit, he would even speak in Japanese. After some time, I learned that my father, while in his youth, had studied in Senshu University in Tokyo for five years. He told us that on the weekends, he would always ride his bicycle and stroll through the streets of Tokyo. The city of Tokyo had left an indelible image in his young heart. And for this reason, I have always held deep impressions of Tokyo eversince childhood. After growing up, I realized that Japan is a country where ancient wisdom met with modernity, and where tradition coexisted with vogue.
In 1992, I was for the first time invited to visit Japan. Upon returning from my visit, I told my father about everthing that I had seen and heard. I broughtback a 10,000 Japanese Yen note and gave it to my father as a souvenir. He was very happy and had ever since talked about wanting to visit Japan again someday, to revisit the school he had attended and see the then modern Japan. But soon after, my father fell seriously ill and his condition steadily worsened. He never recovered well enough to make his intended return to Japan. After my father’s passing, my mother handed me the 10,000 Yen note that I gave to myfather and told me that my father had always kept it close with him. Ever since, I have treasured the note as a memento…
In recent years, I was invited many times to visit Japan. In the antique streets and temples of Tokyo, I carefully searched for and traced the footsteps ofmy father from 70 years ago…how things change as time passes. Everywhere I go, I would always keep a record of what I see and feel through my camera lens.
For the photography exhibition titled “Cities•Tokyo-Beijing•Different Perspectives” held at Canon Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo in August 2010 and thepublication of my photo album Japan through My Eyes, I owe my gratitude to the acclaimed Japanese photographer, Mr. Hisashi Mochizuki. When I was shooting inJapan, Mochizuki-san gave me much assistance and inspiration, for which I am very appreciative and grateful.
