Recently, Wang Yuxin, a researcher from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and an expert on ancient languages, revealed that China's Oracle Bone Script, also known as Oracle Bones, is undergoing the process of applying for U.N. World Intangible Cultural Heritage now.
In the year of 2009, also the 110th anniversary of the discovery of the Oracle Bones by Wang Yirong, more than 200 of experts from all over the world came to a consensus that it is only common sense that the Oracle Bone Script should apply for World Intangible Cultural Heritage at an International seminar on it. They believed that Chinese Oracle Bone Script is a cultural heritage itself since it spread so many years in the country.
Wang said the application process is underway, and some experts from the department of ancient books at the National Library of China had a meeting to discuss how to apply.
However, another expert and official recently expressed his dissenting opinion about the application.
Qi Qingfu, a member of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Expert Committee and a professor of Minzu University of China, said he thinks the Oracle Bone Script is not within the scope of Intangible Cultural Heritage but World Heritage Memory instead, and it should apply through the State Archives Administration.
