Dozens of folk artists from around China have brought the best of their art to the capital Beijing. They have gathered for the 3rd Folk Art Festival of China's Museum of Folk Art Treasure. Let's check out the highlights.

This coat is made from one hundred pieces of fish skin, and each fish weighs over five kilograms. From basking to softening and sterilizing the fish skin to sewing the pieces together, it takes at least half-a-year to complete.

As the only craft of its kind in China, the fish-skin clothes or paintings are a traditional speciality of Hezhe ethnic group in northeast Heilongjiang province, one of the least numerous among China's 55 minorities.

Today, less than twenty people still practice this craft. Guan Hai is one of them. It's hard to earn a living depending only on it. And yet, the craft hangs on thanks to those who want to keep the ancient time-consuming art alive in the fast-paced modern life.

Guan Hai, Fish Skin Art Maker, said, "I fell in love at the first sight with the art made by fish skin. It's amazing. I learned it from an inheritor of the genre of Hezhe ethnic group. Today's young people didn't show much interest in learning or making this. Together with our local government, we're trying to find a way to revive the ancient treasure in modern China. One attempt is to promote it as a tourism souvenir."

Nearly 70 folk artists from around China were invited to attend. Every booth is free and the cost of the trip is covered by the organizer, China's Museum of Folk Art Treasure. Running in its third year, the Folk Art Festival has become an annual party for folk art lovers from home and abroad.

The week-long exhibition is highlighting the endeavor the museum has made to accomplish its mission, pushing China's rich and diverse folk culture back into daily life rather than just being exhibited here, and in museums.
