Uma Wang: Clothing on T-shaped runway tends to show the trend of the season, which is designed for media. Clothing in real life should be usable.

Vega Wang V.S. Li Wei

Vega Wang: Do you have Trypophobia?
Li Wei: No. Otherwise, I would have been crazy long ago.

Vega Wang: Are you afraid of spending the night in your studio?
Li Wei: No. I have Abu there, who always accompanies me.

Vega Wang: Do you feel dazzled after painting a lot of dots? Why do you choose this way of painting that requires much time and energy?
Li Wei: Now, I don’t feel dazzled after painting. However, I did wear sunglasses, for painting my first work. Manual painting necessarily requires long time. And I believe that long time can make my works profound and in-depth. Manual painting is like a ritual for me. It is also a process of abstraction and interaction. All the images in my paintings are from real life. When you see them from afar, you can sense their counterparts in real life.

Vega Wang: Which one of your works took the longest time to complete?
Li Wei: I spent more than four months on Wave of Mountains, which I modified over and over again.

Vega Wang: What do you feel when your works enters into other people’s collection.
Li Wei: I feel recognized. The collector must understand and be touched by my work. Being collected is my works’ good luck and makes me happy too.

Vega Wang: All your works depict real life. Do you have special feeling for real-life things?
Li Wei: I care about the landscapes and objects surrounding me, because I can describe them from so many angles. With painting, people can feel that they are living in beauty, even if they are average persons. What’s important is how you see the persons and things around you. I like using old objects in my works, because they can always be endowed with new meanings.

Vega Wang: What kind of music do you like?
Li Wei: I listen to different music based on my mood.

Vega Wang: What’s your favorite movie?
Li Wei: I don’t have a favorite movie. I like movies that are slow, abstract and black and white.

Vega Wang: Do you have a complex of collecting stuff?
Li Wei: No.

Li Wei V.S. Vega Wang

Li Wei: I like your works so much. You switch the plane to three-dimensional and endow it with its own sound. You will certainly create more wonders, if time permits.
Vega Wang: Because the time is tight, I haven’t finished what I wanted to finish. I originally looked to create a three-dimensional female body with bronze bells. I love your work and your attitude too. I also tried your methodology, which was very interesting.

Li Wei: What drives you to combine bronze bell, lace and fur?
Vega Wang: Bronze bell, lace and fur are all unfamiliar to me. After seeing your works, they are naturally integrated with each other in my mind.

Li Wei: Why did you choose my works?
Vega Wang: I like your attitude and your way of expressing ideas.

Li Wei: What can be called cool in your opinion?
Vega Wang: To be your self is the coolest thing.

Li Wei: Typically, what do you do in a day?
Vega Wang: I go to my studio at ten. After that, I reply email, handle chores in my studio. My assistant Lulu arranges lunch for me. In the afternoon, I read books, write on the blog and paint. I usually stay at my studio until 12 o’clock. Sometimes, I go to watch performance in the evening.

Li Wei: What is the hardest part of creating your brand?
Vega Wang: The hardest part is perseverance.

Li Wei: Do you like any sort of entertainment?
Vega Wang: I like having fun with friends and having fun myself.
