魏晋南北朝，漠北各族相继崛起，雄踞山西，驰骋中原。300余年战乱和苦难的同时，也促成了中国历史上空前规模的民族大融合。这个过程，始终与三晋大地密切相关。因而山西成为中国北方最活跃的地区。亚洲各地乃至地中海的使者与商人云集，异域的宗教思想和文化艺术被广泛吸纳。以平城和晋阳为中心的诸多墓葬出土文物，反映多种文化碰撞迸发的艺术火花，揭示汉唐之间各民族文化融合的历史进程。

　　During the period of the Wei Dynasty, the Jin Dynasty, the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the northern tribes rose in succession. With Shanxi as their base, they bestrode the Central Plains. Over 300 years of wars and miseries had promoted the unprecedented melting of different nationalities. And that melting process was closely related with Shanxi, one of the most dynamic regions in northern China. Messengers and businessmen from around Asia and the Mediterranean gathered here, and alien religions, thoughts, cultures and arts were extensively accepted and absorbed. Many cultural relics unearthed from Pingcheng and Jinyang reflect the sparks of art in the cultural conflicts and integration, and show the historical process of cultural fusion spanning the period from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty.
