  自90年代初期以来,安杰拉·布洛克在不断地发现与探索新的艺术表现语言。有时,观众要坐在某一个看似简单的凳子上,以此关闭某个噪音源,或是开启一个绘画机器,让它在墙上画画,亦或是开始一个电脑游戏。在另一些装置作品中,机械设备的开关被隐藏在一个铺有坐垫的地板上,观众一旦坐在垫子上,就启动了设备的运行。《规则系列》作品充分地表明了安杰拉·布洛克对人类行为控制系统的关注。复杂的世界需要规则来维持正常运行,这种充满理想主义色彩并与社会相适应的思想是安杰拉·布洛克作品的核心。因此她作品中表现的对象往往是我们周遭生活中所常见的。

  5年前,布洛克与艺术家霍尔格·弗瑞兹合作创作了一个观念作品,第一个形似灯箱的“像素盒”——一个立方体模型。这个设备中安置了14瓦红色、绿色和蓝色荧光灯管,通过电子程序对发光度的控制,每种色彩都能产生256种色彩变化,合在一起的话,理论上能产生令人眩晕的不下16,777,216百万种色彩,这是一个很抽象的数字,远远超过人类的眼睛能够分辨的范围。正如作品的名称《图像元素》所暗示的,这些漂亮、貌似注重功能的灯光发射器应被正确理解为一个像素的雕塑再现,一个色彩信息的名称,它更像是一个数码影像的基本逻辑单位,而不是单纯的物理单位。

  现在这些“图像元素”的原理被运用到更大型的室内公共艺术作品中,形成巨大的彩色灯光装置。置身在安杰拉·布洛克的作品前,你会情不自禁地产生控制这些灯光的欲望,并想知道这一明一暗间所蕴含的思想。这些装置中,有的是由人们的行为触发系统开关,有的是通过音乐的旋律来控制,还有的是按照一定的程序控制灯光的亮与灭。处在作品之中,我们会被它深深地感染,不由自主地跟着它的节拍而不断地触发开关。对观众的平常行为做出反映是布洛克创作的根本原则,也是她作品的典型特征。

  From the beginning of the 1990s, Angela Bulloch has been constantly discovering and exploring the new language of art expression. Sometimes, the audience has to sit on a seemingly simple stool to shut down a source of noises; or start a painting machine to paint on a wall, or initiate a TV game. In some other installation works, when the audience sits on a cushion, the equipment is turned on. In the Rules Series, the works sufficiently show Bulloch’s concern about the control system of human behaviors. The complicated world needs rules to maintain the normal operation, this idea full of idealism and fitting the society constitutes the core of Bulloch’s works. Thus, the objects appearing in her art are what we usually encounter in daily life.

  It was five years ago that Bulloch produced the first pixel box-a modular cube-shaped lightbox and conceptual product developed in collaboration with artist Holger Friese. The device contains 14-watt fluorescent tubes in red, green and blue that are each capable, via luminosity controls, of producing 256 colour variations and which together can theoretically generate no less than a mind-boggling 16,777,216 million hues-a rather abstract number and many more than the human eye is capable of differentiating. As their name Picture Element suggests, these slick, ostensibly function-orientated light emitters are properly understood as sculptural representations of a pixel-the name for a piece of colour information which is the basic logical rather than physical unit of a digital image.

  Now, the rule of Picture Element has been used into larger indoor works of public art to form large-scale installations of colored lights. Standing inside these large-scale installations, you couldn’t help wishing to control these lights, trying to understand the thoughts hidden behind the glittering lights. Among these installations, some are intrigued by human behaviors, some are controlled by melodies, and some turn on and off according to certain rules. When surrounded by her works, we would be deeply moved, involuntarily switching the lights on and off with its rhythm. Reflection of the audience’s common behaviors is the basic rule of Bulloch’s creation, also the typical characteristic of her works.
