A New Era for the Museum Collection: Recent Addition of Fine Painting and Calligraphy

The National Palace Museum’s collection of painting and calligraphy was inherited from the holdings of the Qing dynasty imperial house. Representing fine artworks amassed by the court over the ages, the collection is extremely rich and exquisite in both quantity and quality. After cultural objects from the Palace Museum were moved with the Nationalist government to Taiwan in 1949, the collection has continued to expand. Including an active program for the purchase of painting, calligraphy, and antiquities as well as donations by many prominent figures, collectors, and institutions in society, the number of additions to the collection over the past fifty-plus years has reached about 2,500.
These new acquisitions to the original collection have greatly enlarged the scope of the National Palace Museum’s holdings. Not only including some works from the former Qing palace collections previously scattered among private hands, they also feature others relatively lacking in the original collection, such as works by loyalist artists of the late Ming dynasty. In addition, there are works that the Museum has always actively sought to reinforce its
holdings-painting and calligraphy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Besides the diverse styles of fine art by these late Qing and early Republican masters, the collection now also features many excellent pieces by important painters and calligraphers from or who had moved to Taiwan. The donations of painting and calligraphy from all quarters have extended the timeline of the Museum’s collection, enriching and diversifying it considerably. It now more fully reflects the course of Chinese history, inaugurating a new epoch for the collection of the National Palace Museum.
The rich collection of a museum is not something that appears overnight. In gratitude to the enthusiastic individuals from all walks of life who have so graciously donated to the National Palace Museum, a special painting and calligraphy gallery at the Museum has been created in recent years to present in rotations these new donations and entrustments. This exhibition, “A New Era for the Museum Collection: Recent Additions of Fine Painting and Calligraphy," includes select works of painting and calligraphy that have been donated to the Museum over the past few decades. This exhibit not only pays tribute to the many who have so unselfishly donated, it also displays the Museum’s fine achievements in actively acquiring artworks over many years. Furthermore, it is hoped that all members of society will continue to participate in this grand project of collection building and help make the National Palace Museum a museum shared by all the people.
