张雨方很早就参与了中国前卫艺术活动。1981年三月，作为主要组织者之一，张雨方和其他几位西安艺术家一起举办了《西安首届现代艺术展》。这是文化革命以后出现的少数中国前卫艺术展览之一。这个展览对西北地区当代艺术的发展起到了很大的推动作用。时隔三十年，张雨方举办这次个人回顾展向观众展示他三十余年的创作历程，从展出的200余幅作品来看，张雨方在1977年便开始探索当代艺术的表现形式，试图突破苏式的写实主义传统。张雨方的作品用一种意象的手法把个人对现实的感受表达出来，他试图综合超现实主义的梦幻和中国传统绘画的诗意特点。即便是在九十年代从事公司实业以后，他仍然坚持创作，并始终把探讨一种超越国界的美学系统视为理想和己任，并愿意在经济上为这个理想而作出奉献。实业与艺术并重是很多八十年代出道的艺术家所走过来的路。正是抱着这个愿望，张雨方在九十年代初就开始探讨市场经济与当代艺术的互动，并且与同道举办过拍卖和展览活动。九十年代以来张雨方开始收藏当代艺术作品，筹建深圳大望文化艺术高地，支持了当代艺术的发展。张雨方此次展出的作品展示了他过去三十年不断探索的创作历程。

　　Foreword

　　Zhang Yufang joined Chinese Avant-garde art movement at the very early stage. As one of the organizers, Zhang Yufang, along with a few other artists, initiated “The Premier Xi'an Modern Art Exhibition” in March 1981. This exhibition was one of few Chinese Avant-garde art exhibitions that occurred in China after the Cultural Revolution ended. It had a great impact on the contemporary art movement in Northwest China. Now after some thirty years, Zhang Yufang is showing his thirty-year artistic journey in this retrospective to the audiences. Viewing from over 200 works in this exhibition, we can observe that Zhang Yufang has started to explore contemporary art forms as early as 1977, he also attempted to break away from then popular Russian-soviet Realism tradition. Zhang's work applies a method of “Yi”, using significant imageries to express his individual emotions and ideas about reality. He combines Surrealism with a kind of dreaming poetics from Chinese painting tradition. Even after he went into business in the 90s, he continued to produce art. He is not only consistently taking on the responsibility of searching for a borderless aesthetics, but also financially supports this idealistic quest. A road of pursuit business and art simultaneously was opened up by many artists in the 80s. With this intention, Zhang Yufang has started to explore the connections between market economy and contemporary art, and he has organized many art auctions and exhibitions. In order to support Chinese contemporary art, he started to collect art from early 90s, and founded Shen Zhen Art Highland as well. This retrospective provides us an opportunity to witness the journey of Zhang Yufang's thirty-year continuous artistic exploration.
