Cai Xiaosong Ink Installation Planet , 2011.

June 2011, Chinese artist Cai Xiaosong’s 54 pieces ink installation work Planet exhibited at 54th Venice Biennale.

Expect state pavilion, there were more than 3000 independent curators applied for this Venice Biennale and only 30 curators been chose, among whom, Lu Rongzhi was one of them, and this time, together with Renzo Di Renzo and Felix Schoeber, they brought a paralleled exhibition with Venice Biennale named: Future Pass-Collateral Event of the 54th Venice Biennial which included more than 100 artists in Asia, Cai Xiaosong was one of them, others like Takashi Muradami, Yayoi Kusama, Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, Xu Bing. This exhibition was held by Italy Claudio Buziol Foundation, Taipei UNEED Foundation and Beijing Today Art Museum, at a Museum in Venice 13 century’s cloister.

Differs from some other artist choose to show their famous works, Cai Xiaosong brought his new creation Planet in this Venice Biennale, Planet was formed by 54 ink silk scroll paintings and very attractive in the exhibition for its big size.

This work cost Cai Xiaosong one year time to finish. He chooses Taihu lake stone as the transcription and creates a starry sky that encapsulated in a independent space and shining with blue lights which echoes to Lu Rongzhi’s exhibition theme: the relationship between Traditional and Contemporary; Universe and Individual, East and West; Ying and Yang, Past and Present. ‘to find harmony and aesthetic in conflict , opposite and contradiction has always been my works’ theme and I hope this work can be appreciated.’ Said Cai Xiaosong.

It was reported that at the previous day of the exhibition, a key museum in Netherlands was intend to collect this work and exhibit it permanently. ‘This is surely a great honor for an artist if his work been collected by any important museums and displayed forever.’ Cai Xiaosong expressed.

With the exhibition of Future Pass-Collateral Event of the 54th Venice Biennial, Planet will displayed in Venice for three months and then will tour to Rotterdam Netherlands, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and then Beijing Today Art Museum next year.
